Beauford Delaney and Alteronce Gumby | Art Basel Paris (2026)

Michael Rosenfeld Gallery and Jeffrey Deitch are excited to return to Art Basel Paris for the second year with a collaborative presentation in Booth A48 featuring paintings and works on paper by Beauford Delaney (1901–1979) shown alongside eight new paintings and three sculptures by Alteronce Gumby (b.1985) intentionally created in dialogue with Delaney’s oeuvre. The presentation reveals the timeless resonances between two artists committed to the material exploration of color and light. Of the presentation, Michael Rosenfeld states: “Jeffrey and I are thrilled to be working together again to present this natural pairing of two supremely talented artists. Seeing the work of Gumby and Delaney side by side is a true testament to the power of abstraction.”

Though separated by decades, there are parallels in Delaney and Gumby’s paths through life and the forces informing their creative output: both were raised by clergy members and their work reflects inspiration derived from music, Claude Monet’s visionary use of color, James Baldwin and his revolutionary writings, and time spent in the city of Paris.

For this presentation, Gumby will debut eight new Sacred Geometry paintings of various sizes, expanding on the body of work that debuted at his 2025 solo presentation Walk on the Moon at Jeffrey Deitch in Los Angeles.
